This trail, which includes the starting point for the 1st and 2nd Lines, sets off along the riverside path in Vila Franca de Xira, in the direction of the town of Alhandra and the viewpoint and Monument to the Lines of Torres Vedras. This monument is topped by a statue of Hercules. It was designed by General Joaquim da Costa Cascais and completed in 1883. From here, you can take several paths and enjoy a spectacular view over the Lezírias (fens) and the river Tagus. Following the route, you will arrive at the first Subserra fort (nº 114) and the New Subserra Battery (nº 114A), situated on the hilltops which included the position at Alhandra at the beginning of the 1st Line. You should then go towards Fort Casa in the direction of the Lines of Torres Vedras Heritage and Visitors’ Centre in the town of the same name. In Fort nº 38, as well as housing an exhibition dedicated to the local impacts of the French Invasions on the area, you can visit the interior of curated structures of the fortification, discovered during archaeological digs.
