Pause to explore the fort at Alqueidão – also known internationally as the “Great Fort at Sobral”. Discover why Wellington made it his excellent command post. It was the only point garrisoned by frontline troops, comprising General Pack’s brigade and two artillery companies from the town of Sobral, specially formed and trained by Marshal Beresford.
Archaeological works carried out between 2008 and 2011 added to our understanding of the techniques used in the construction of this unique 19th century military structure but also revealed evidence of an earlier occupation of the site during the Iron Age.
Note the two unusual constructions inside the fort: the large north magazine and the “Governor’s House” – the only buildings of their kind on the Lines.
