The name derives from the small medieval hermitage of St Vincent which was integrated into the other military structures.
It was one of the two advance command posts planned for the front of the main Line along with the Great Hill Fort (Sobral de Monte Agraço) and it eventually formed part of the 1st Line.
Three redoubts were originally projected for St Vincent’s hill but, during construction, they decided to reinforce the position, bringing the forts together within a 1,500-metre walled perimeter and thus creating a substantial internal space.
