Down the hill and to the rear of Fort Alquieidão, in the village of Pêro Negro, is the house that Wellington used as his headquarters. It was a farmhouse, known locally as “Quinta dos Freixos”. About 1 km away, General William Beresford established his headquarters in Casal Cochim. Both were half way between the Great Fort and the central communications station at Serra do Socorro.
