Dating from the 19th century, this country house has been carefully restored in order to maintain all its rustic charm, with touches of modernity. Located 30 km from Lisbon, the house is surrounded by a huge green area, ideal for walking and cycling and just a few kilometers from the Interpretation Centers of the Lines of Torres and Forte do Alqueidão.

By the fireplace or simply resting from one of the many activities that can be done here, discover, between the green of the landscape and the sound of birdsongs, the ideal place to relax, just 30 minutes from Lisbon.

The morning silence is interrupted by the horns that announce the arrival of freshly baked bread, fish, which arrives on the plate with the freshness of the seaside, or by the murmur of the street sale of everyday utilities.

QUINTA DA FOLGOROSA

At Quinta da Folgorosa we invite you to taste fine wines, in an environment where history and tradition envelop the entire experience in glamour. The familiar and warm welcome, accompanied by the host, transports you to more than three hundred years of vineyard and wine production, at the strokes of a remarkable building from the beginning of the 19th century by the architect Ernesto Korrodi, whose bucolic sphere inspires emotions that toast to you. Being remarkably close to the Lines of Torres Vedras, the farm was a natural stage for military actions. Lord Wellington is said to have claimed that these were the best Arinto-based white wines from the Lisbon region. Later, it was the French troops who camped on one of the lands next to the Quinta, still called “Junot”, the commander of the corps that attacked the region. The wine tastings can be combined with memorable experiences such as the grape harvest, a lunch that recalls the old habits of working in the field and the traditional foot treading in “lagares” (reserved in advance for groups).

INTERPRETATION CENTRE OF THE LINES OF TORRES VEDRAS

Visit one of the Interpretation Centre of the Lines of Torres Vedras, in Sobral de Monte Agraço, and find out more about one of the most remarkable historical episodes in Portuguese history – the French Invasions – in the place where the battle between the Allied and the French troops once occurred, on October 12, 1810.

The exhibition tells you about how the largest and most effective defensive system in Europe was built – the Lines of Torres Vedras -, the importance of an alternative circulation and communication network, and the role of the population, who, sacrificing their goods, did not hesitate to execute the English command strategy and dug ditches, built walls, destroyed bridges, cut roads and hundreds of trees and created all kinds of obstacles to the enemy’s progression.

The exhibition highlights episodes, characters, sites, and buildings that marked the experience of these people, in a time that was deeply troubled but decisive for the preservation of the Independence of Portugal.

CONDE FERREIRA SCHOOL

The centenary Conde Ferreira School is located in the historic centre of the village of Arruda dos Vinhos.

Great advocate of public education in Portugal, Joaquim Ferreira dos Santos – 1st Count of Ferreira (1782-1866), bequeathed financial conditions for the creation of mixed schools, of primary education, in places that were seats of the municipalities, with coherent architecture and housing for the teachers.

Progress and social transformation were the great stimulus of this measure, the school being synonymous with the new civic belief of the people.

Today, the building accommodates the headquarters of the Arruda dos Vinhos Parish Council.

MATRIZ CHURCH OF ARRUDA DOS VINHOS

In the 16th century, according to tradition, following his stay in Arruda fleeing the plague, D. Manuel I ordered the reconstruction of the temple, damaged by previous earthquakes, applying renovation and expansion works.

On the occasion of the Third French Invasion, in 1810, an English officer, John Kincaid, revealed in his correspondence with England that when he arrived at the village of Arruda dos Vinhos he had come across a church, built in a “style of magnificence” out of place in such a village and that it had not been damaged. Upon entering the temple, John Kincaid and Captain Simmons found, before the altar, the dead body of a poor elderly woman. Apparently, this lady had not been able to escape with the rest of the population, so the two Englishmen decided that she “should have more glory in the grave than she appeared to have had outside of it”. Joining their efforts, they managed to raise the slab of one of the church graves and there they deposited the body.
